Tricky difference between "あげます","くれます" and "もらいます"

-Speaker says this as putting himself in the giver’s shoes.

-The giver basically should be a person who has close relationship with you. Such as your family member including yourself.

 

(Wrong)田中さんはわたしにプレゼントをあげます。

(Correct)弟(おとうと)は田中さんにプレゼントをあげます。

 

くれます。/give

In case that you don’t have close relationship with neither the giver and receiver, “あげます” is used and you can’t use “くれます”.

(Correct)鈴木(すずき)さんは田中さんにプレゼントをあげます。

(Wrong)鈴木さんは田中さんにプレゼントをくれます。

 

You can apply the same rule to the following expressions.

-Verb + "あげます"

-Verb + "くれます"

-Verb + "もらいます"
